Why we changed
For years our audit methodology, based on Hong Kong Standards on Auditing, lived in paper working papers, spreadsheets and separate electronic documents. The audit manager and the engagement partner reviewed every file, and completed paper files had to be stored, sometimes offsite.
Working remotely during COVID showed us the value of collaborating in the cloud. We also wanted clearer links between planning, risk assessment, controls where applicable, audit procedures and conclusions. Our aim was consistency, not simply going digital.
We have a more structured audit, and it is easier to review.
Learning before scaling
We formed a small implementation team and rebuilt completed audits as training files, kept separate from the archive. Questions that came up along the way were recorded and turned into internal guidance before live engagements moved across.
What is different for our clients
- Review points are raised against the working paper, assigned to a person and tracked until cleared.
- Evidence sits with the work it supports, and sign-off status is easy to monitor.
- Links between risks, controls, assertions and our planned responses are easier to follow across the engagement.
Our methodology has not changed. The software gives our existing approach a clearer structure that is easier to review.
Meeting Hong Kong requirements
Caseware provides a structure based on International Standards on Auditing. Hong Kong Standards on Auditing are substantially converged with them, but local requirements and regulatory expectations still apply, and the HKICPA Audit Practice Manual provides implementation guidance. We continue to refine our templates and mapping with this in mind.
Advice for other firms
Buying the software is only the beginning. Adopting a new audit platform also involves a firm's methodology, quality management, professional standards, training and supervision. Our suggestions:
- Set up a dedicated implementation team.
- Use completed engagements as training cases.
- Record recurring issues and build internal guidance.
- Allow more time than you expect.
What comes next
We are not claiming measurable time savings yet. The clearest gains so far are consistency, visibility and documentation quality. Next, we are refining our templates, mapping and guidance, building Caseware workflows for group audits and consolidation work, and reducing administrative preparation so that senior staff can spend more time on judgement.
